| Adam Brake and his son Mathew are arriving in the village of Milbury for a three month stay so that Adam can complete research for his university. The village is surounded by a stone circle that dates back thousands of years. Suddenly, while driving into the village, Matthew sees what looks like one of the stones in the middle of the road. Adam breaks and just manages to avoid a colision. When Mathew looks again he discovers it wasn't a stone but one of the villagers, Mrs Crabtree.
Mrs Crabtree is Adam and Matthew's land lady and takes them to her house. Mrs Crabtree says that some boxes had arrived for Adam the day before. Mrs Crabtree goes off to make some tea. Adam sends Mathew to fetch the rest of the bags from the car while he checks the boxes. As he moves to leave, Matthew sees a girl staring at them through the window. The girl moves away when he goes to the window. Adam takes an electronic instrument out of one of the boxes. Mrs Crabtree comes in with the tea. Adam tells her that the machine is a magnetometer. It measures Magnatic fields. He says that the 53 stones that surround the villiage are giving off magnetic fields. Matthew shows Mrs Crabtree a portait of people worshiping at a stone circle that looks suspicously like the one that surrounds the village. On seeing the painting Mrs Crabtree screams and faints dropping the tea tray in the process.
Hendrick, a proment local who owns Mrs Crabtree's house, chooses this moment to make his entrance. Hendrick tells the now recovered Mrs Crabtree to go make some more tea. As she leaves she tells Hendrick to have a "happy day". Hendrick asks what happened to Mrs. Crabtree. Adam shows him the painting. Hendrick is preturbed by the painting and asks where Adam got it. Adam says that Matthew found it in a junk shop. Hendrick agrees that the painting bears a resemblence to the circle around the Village. Matthew informs Hendrick that the Latin inscription on the painting reads "I deny the existence of that which exsists". Adam sends Matthew out so he and Hendrick can talk business.
Matthew meets Bob who shows him around the village. As they set off, a mysterious man watches them from behind one of the stones.
Back at Mrs Crabtree's Hendrick says he has read one of Adam's papers and that he was very impressed by it. Adam is flattered. Hendrick looks at the painting again. Adam says that it is strange that Matthew should have found the painting. Hendrick counters by saying that perhaps the painting found Matthew...
Hendrick asks if Adam and Matthew will be staying in the Village once Adam's research is finished. Adam says he can't afford to. His wife died three years previous so he now has to support Matthew by himself. Hendrick asks how Matthew coped with his mother's death. Adam says that he handled it well. However, he has found that letting Matthew handle his mother's things upsets him. Matthew begins to remember incidents in great detail whenever he touches something of his mother's. Adam hopes the change of scenery will do him some good.
While out biking with Bob, Matthew spots a truck heading towards them. Bob continues on oblivious. Matthew averts his eyes as the truck is about to hit. However, when he opens his eyes the truck has vanished and Bob is unhurt... |
